Heads South leap ahead on their musical journey with this release of the Quintet’s second album. On The Way marks an affirmation of their strength of playing and writing and a broadening of style. Irresistibly exuberant Latin Jazz originals form the core of the album, such as Harriman’s Spanish spirited La Plaza and Waterman’s rampant Songo For Mia. There are driving arrangements of gems from Horace Silver and Neal Hefti whose Odd Couple theme is given an organ infused rumba clave groove. The pace is complemented by the mellower fare of the un-LatinJazz-like Tricolor in 3/4 time and the eastward leaning Moringa with its recurring frame drum. The smouldering Mexican ballad Cenizas underlines the Latin warmth. "Refreshing and adventurous..uplifting originals..spirited solos..a delightful whole" The Musician "Brimming with infectious high-energy grooves" JazzUK

The Heads South personnel are trumpeter Steve Waterman, bandleader/composer/keys John Harriman, Buster Birch on drumkit, timbale, frame drum, castanets, Cuban percussionist Chino Martell Morgan on congas, bongos, cajon, guiro and their newest member Venezuelan bassplayer Adolfredo Pulido. Heads South released their first album Record Flight in October 2010.

The release of the new album comes in a busy 12 months for the Band with their selection as joint winners of the UK Jazz Services/National Rural Touring Award for 2014/5 and a national tour of Wales sponsored by the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama Jazz Ensemble and the Arts Council of Wales. "Very talented..dazzling solos....a Band that is well worth seeing" The Jazzmann October 2013 Brecon.
